Mineral Engineering

Mission of the Department

The department’s mission is to build up an intellectual and scientific solidarity in mineral resource technology. It will provide knowledge useful for producing the region's mineral resources, educate graduates to work in any area of the mineral industry, promulgate newly acquired knowledge through publication of original research, and provide professional service to the mineral industry and public to assist in the safe and environment friendly way of processing of minerals.

Vision of the Department

Minerals and metals play a crucial role for a sustainable society, to the society’s standard of living and to economic development. Mineral resource management must be conducted in the context of sound process and product life practices focusing on the variety of mineral resources and their grades. All activities in relation to finding, extracting, producing, adding value, using, reusing, recycling, and, if necessary, disposing of mineral and metal products must be done in an efficient, competitive and environmentally responsible manner, keeping in mind about the environmental quality for present and future generations. These achievements are possible by adopting the traditional as well as advanced technology of extraction and processing, with fields of financial management, equipment manufacturing and recycling. As the natural mineral resources are exhaustible, and the foremost objective is to cater new technology for efficient use of low grade as well as waste tailings for recovery of minerals.

Vision Statement

To be master of mineral processing technology and research related to recovery of the earth’s mineral resources, through the development of dynamic, skilled engineers and scholars for a sustainable global society.

Department Home

The Department of Mineral Engineering, Government College of Engineering, Keonjhar is setting its footprint in 2008 with 4 year B.Tech. programme to provide man power to the Mineral Industry with a strong fundamental knowledge in the field of Mineral Engineering and to meet the challenges of rapidly changing technological environment. Mineral Engineering deals with the gradation as well as up gradation of minerals. The course is specifically designed to cater to the needs of mineral benefication plants and to meet the requirements of the mineral industry particularly for quality control and processing of the minerals to bridge the gap between the progressively decreasing grades of mineral reserve and the increasingly stringent specifications for the user industry.

The department provides training to the students in some of the highly reputed organisations like Indian rare Earths Ltd. (Chhatrapur),National Metallurgical laboratory (Jamsedpur),Institute of Minerals and materials Technology (Bhubaneswar) etc.. In addition students also get opportunity to work on projects which enhances their skill to handle new challenges in operations of mineral benefication. The students of this department have been working in organization like Hindustan Copper Limited, NMDC, Global coal and mining Ltd,Talcher, Arya Iron and Steel Co. Pvt. Ltd., Barbil. The students and faculty members are also the active members of IIME and attending national level seminars regularly. Such opportunities allow the students to be updated with the latest technologies in the mineral and earth science industry and in having a firsthand experience in solving mineral industry related problems.
