Metallurgical & Materials Engineering

Department Home

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is devoted to the design, creation and fundamental understanding of materials by understanding relationships between processing, structure, properties and performance in engineering applications. It was established in the year 2009.

The quality of life shared by mankind has improved with the development of materials. The material industry includes conventional metals and ceramics, semiconductors, ferroelectrics, optical and magnetic materials for information technology and electronics, composites, metallic alloys and batteries and sensors for energy and sustainable environment related industries. Materials have been developed with the basic role of improving advanced industry. Virtually all sophisticated products — computers, aircraft, biomedical devices require materials manufactured to precise specifications. Increasingly, these specifications are determined at the molecular level. The evolution of advanced products can be hobbled by the limitations of the available materials.

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is based on materials science and deals with the economical synthesis and production engineering of desired forms and required quantities of materials having particular properties. Basic understanding in materials science is applied to relate processing. The properties, performance, and functionality of materials are improved on the basis of investigations in the area of metallurgy and materials science. This work contributes to improving the quality of life of mankind through the development of materials having innovative properties, high performance, and diverse functionality. In the coming innovative materials era, the department must offer specialization, internationalization, and interdisciplinary research and education. Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is a scholastic field of continuous growth and expansion and one of the most exciting and challenging fields of engineering.
